After being granted land for serving in the Texas Revolution, Leander’s first settlers arrived in approximately 1845, settling what became known as “Bagdad.” Until the 1850s, when the town experienced the arrival of businesses and surveyors, the people in the area fended off constant Indian attacks. The little town soon became a stop on the stage line from Austin to Lampasas, and, in the 1880s, the railroad arrived.
Soon after the railroad was established, lots were sold near the railroad and the town was officially established in 1882 and renamed Leander, after Leander “Catfish” Brown, one of the men who completed the railroad line. Leander was sparsely populated until the City of Leander was incorporated in 1978, and the area started to experience the growth that continues today.
Today, Leander’s 20,000 residents enjoy the combination of the nearby city of Austin, plentiful amenities in their own city and proximity to the best natural beauty in Central Texas. This extraordinary combination provides a reason for anyone to live here, whether your priority is education or stable employment or diverse recreation.
The Leander Independent School District, the largest in the county and the fastest growing in the state, is made up of two high schools, four middle schools and 11 elementary schools, all of which have reputations for excellence in academics. Leander has also continued to be extremely attractive to a variety of businesses, from restaurants to banks to one-of-a-kind boutiques.
Leander’s residents also relish the area’s lakes, hills and wildlife, which provide a perfect contrast to the fast-paced life of nearby Austin. Crystal Falls Municipal Golf Course, for instance, is surrounded by the natural landscape of Central Texas and continues to be one of the area’s most attractive and challenging golf courses.
